Palm Beach County is among the top four regions in this country that will continue to see the highest growth in the over 65-year old population. Palm Beach County remains a destination site for older adults which accounts for the exploding population anticipated in the near and distant future.

Current estimates indicate a population of more than 287,000 people over the age of 65, with a growth of 16% over the next five years. This population represents nearly a quarter of the total community. It should also be noted that Jewish seniors over the age of 65 represent nearly 60% of this population with the most rapidly growing population being 75+. Notably, Palm Beach County has been recognized as an “epicenter of aging” in terms of numbers of Jewish seniors, which makes MorseLife Learning Institute all the more relevant.

Annually, MorseLife serves thousands of older adults in its various entities, including residents in its long-term care and short-term rehabilitation programs and in its independent and assisted living residences. In addition, the community/home-based service agency on a yearly basis provides 130,000 units of home care services, 10,000 member days of adult day programming, and 40,000 Kosher home-delivered meals, and reaches out to more than 4000 clients in its Homebound Mitzvah Program.

Residents/clients would typically have at least two responsible parties/caregivers to target for educational programs. In relation to this, national statistics indicate that nearly 70% of the workforce will be involved in some form of family caregiver by the year 2010. There is an identified urgent need to formalize and disseminate caregiver expertise to the care giving population.

From those statistics, MorseLife foresees a significant potential audience from among seniors and caregivers.

Palm Beach County is home to 82 nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities, 16 hospitals, 151 home health care agencies and 101 assisted living residences. Clinical and management professionals represent target audiences for professional education, given the need for those in licensed roles to earn continuing education units. This also extends to retirees who need continuing education units to maintain their licensure.

Additionally, there are more than 60 Jewish communal agencies both employing people and serving clients in this community, as well as 54 synagogues and 8 Jewish educational institutions. These are organizations that are ideal targets for management development programs, and, for those that specifically serve seniors of our community.

Beyond the health care sector, the County is the home to many non-profit and for-profit employers, including Florida Power and Light (2800 employees), ADT (1,650 employees), Office Depot (1,500 employees) and Pratt and Whitney (1,200 employees), many of which offer services to seniors and have employees grappling with caregiver issues.

These indicators reinforce MorseLife’s position as the premier resource for educational initiatives with family caregivers, clinical and management professionals looking for creative solutions to the multi-level challenges of aging.

With the above statistics in mind, MorseLife is preparing itself, its employees and the community to deal with the reality of aging through its education efforts. The organization’s leaders look forward to seeing MorseLife Learning Institute rise to the challenge of all organizational and community-based education needs.

Other Local Education Efforts

There are other organizations, primarily hospitals and professional organizations, that offer professional and community education throughout Palm Beach County. On a regular basis, it will be important to see what others are offering throughout the year and ensure non-duplication.

MorseLife has an excellent reputation of collaboration with Jewish communal agencies and other provider organizations and educational institutions. Having demonstrated powerful outcomes through collaboration, we foresee further opportunities going forward. Additionally, MorseLife has excellent meeting facilities and is centrally located.
