MorseLife Literary Society Finalizes Inaugural Season of "Breakfasts with Celebrated Authors"

Book lovers from throughout Palm Beach County gathered this past winter at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach for MorseLife Literary Society, a series of monthly breakfasts with celebrated authors.

Nancy Horan was first author presenter.

Nancy Horan, author of the New York Times best seller “Loving Frank” was the first presenter on January 15th. She spoke with enthusiasm about the fruition of her debut historical novel “Loving Frank” which delves into the relationship between legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick Cheney during the years 1907 – 1914. She talked about her seven years of meticulous research, which brought to life Wright and Cheney, both married to others, and the conflicts and sacrifices Mamah was forced to make as she grappled with her roles as mother, wife, lover and intellectual.

Chris Bohjalian, author of “Skeletons at the Feast” was the featured presenter on February 19. For this, his eleventh novel, Bohjalian ambitiously tackles one of the most brutal periods in human history -- the last six month of World War II in Poland and the eastern edges of Germany -- while staying true to his universal theme of everyday people coping with extraordinary moral dilemmas. The novel was inspired in part by an actual diary a friend asked Bohjalian to read in 1998: it had been kept by his friend’s East Prussian grandmother from 1920 through 1945.

Rick Bragg, author of “The Prince of Frogtown,” spoke on March 12th. Rick Bragg is a journalist who won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing in 1996 for his work at The New York Times. He is also the author of All Over But the Shoutin,’ Ava’s Man , as well as three other books. His latest book documents a journey back in time to the lush Alabama landscape of Bragg’s youth, to the 101 year old mill, the town’s blight and salvation, and to a troubled, charismatic hustler coming of age in its shadow—Rick’s father, a man bound to bring harm even to those he truly loves.

According to Mary Alice Pappas, Senior Vice President of MorseLife Foundation, the MorseLife Literary Society was a wonderful opportunity during this season for us to host some of this country’s most accomplished authors. “I am sure our attendees loved the chance to join together in their love of reading, and discuss these books with those who created them,” she said.
