Jewish Agencies in Palm Beach Area to Host Community Holocaust Remembrance Event April 11th.
Featured speaker is Riva Ginsburg, the daughter of Jewish resistance fighters
West Palm Beach, FL (March 23, 2010) - MorseLife, Inc./The Tradition of the Palm Beaches, the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County and the Ferd & Gladys Alpert Jewish Family and Children’s Service will host a Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) event on Sunday, April 11th at The Tradition of the Palm Beaches, 4920 Loring Drive in West Palm Beach.
Riva Ginsburg, a notable speaker on Jewish resistance and the impact of the Holocaust on the children of victims and survivors, will be the featured presenter. Ms. Ginsburg, born in a Displaced Persons Camp in Fahrenvald, Germany, is the daughter of Jewish resistance fighters. Her mother, Judith Ginsburg, was among the Bielski partisans whose story was the basis for the film Defiance. Ms. Ginsburg will introduce the acclaimed documentary, “Jerusalem in the Woods,” which focuses on the Bielski brothers and those partisans who fought the Nazis and saved thousands of Jewish people.
Riva has taught Yiddish culture and language at Florida Atlantic University and the State University of New York at Binghamton where she is part of the Judaic Studies Faculty. Currently, she teaches and lectures at Elderhostels, synagogues and elder care facilities, and also speaks for chapters of Hadassah and ORT, as well as the Council of Jewish Women, Brandeis and Jewish Heritage Clubs.
The event will also include traditional candle-lighting by area teenagers in partnership with local Holocaust survivors. Also featured will be Rabbi Alan Sherman, Director of Chaplain Services for MorseLife who will lead prayers, and Cantor Norman Brody of Temple Beth El in West Palm Beach, who will perform traditional songs of remembrance, prayer and hope.
